: Prince Fielder singled home the go-ahead run in the eighth inning and added a long solo home run as the Tigers edged host Cincinnati.
After Sean Marshall (1-3) intentionally walked Miguel Cabrera following a Brennan Boesch two-out double, Fielder swatted the first pitch he saw up the middle to bring home Boesch and put the Tigers ahead for good.
Brayan Villarreal (2-1) worked a scoreless seventh inning to earn the win. Joaquin Benoit pitched a flawless eighth and Jose Valverde retired the side in order in the ninth for his 11th save.
Ramon Santiago's solo shot to right field gave the Tigers a 1-0 lead in the top of the second inning, and Fielder extended the advantage by drilling a first-pitch breaking ball from Bronson Arroyo deep over the right-field wall for his 10th of the season.
Cincinnati drew even in the bottom of the fourth. After Chris Heisey opened with a single and moved to third on a Joey Votto double, Detroit starter Justin Verlander retired the next two Reds before issuing a four-pitch walk to Ryan Ludwick.
Todd Frazier made him pay, hitting a single to right-center that plated Heisey and Votto. Verlander escaped the inning by striking out Ryan Hanigan to end a 10-pitch at-bat.
Verlander found himself in more trouble in the fifth - loading the bases on a Heisey double and a pair of walks - but struck out Jay Bruce swinging to end the threat.
The Tigers ace surrendered two runs on six hits while needing 127 pitches to get through six frames, the 55th straight game he has reached that plateau. He walked three and struck out nine.
Arroyo limited the Tigers to five hits while striking out four. He didn't walk a batter.GAME NOTEBOOK
